What better way to roam around a travel destination than on a motor scooter? You get to go wherever you want whenever you want. You can even save money on transportation or tour expenses. If you’ve never traveled a foreign land on two wheels, however, you probably need to know a little bit more before you go off on your own. Here’s what you need to know:
Before you rent a motor scooter:
Make sure you have a license. The rental shop may not require it, but if you get into an accident, insurance won’t cover you if you haven’t got a license.
Don’t drink and drive.
Rent a bike that you can drive, not the bike of your dreams.
Don’t blindly choose the cheapest scooter. They are often in worse condition.
Inspect the scooter before riding off. Take a look at the tire treads, make sure the engine doesn't leak, and all the lights work. If there are any scrapes, take photos so you don’t have to pay for it later. The most important thing to check are the brakes - make sure they work!
Always wear protective gear! Better safe than sorry.
As you drive:
Keep glancing across the road for people, animals, and anything that may obstruct your way and necessitate slowing down.
Have a finger on the brakes so you can stop at any time.
Ride a gear lower in traffic so you can speed up as needed.
Beware of poor road conditions - potholes, ice, water, and oil among others.
Have a backup route.
Don’t allow yourself to be squeezed out.
Wear brightly colored gear so you are always seen on the road.
Turn your indicators on when you are turning, and off when you have turned.
Check your mirrors constantly.
When you are merging into another lane, remember to glance in your mirrors, turn on your indicator light, glance, then move.
Don’t put yourself between vehicles and exit ramps.
When crossing or turning into a bigger road, use a larger car for protection.
Have fun, but prioritize safety.
At this point, you know a little bit more about the rental process and how to stay safe on the road. So if a vacation is coming up, go ahead and plan a trip to a travel destination that you can explore on two wheels! You’re sure to have a blast.
